The term ‘civil society’ has many definitions. The United Nations Development Programme considers that civil society is a third sector existing alongside and interacting with the State and profit-seeking firms. It can include (non-exhaustive):  
NGOs. They make up an important part of civil society
Human rights defenders, including children’s rights defenders. 
‘Faith-based groups’, advocacy groups and others. (UNDP, 2001)
