In addition to the CRC, other international instruments, including other core human rights treaties, apply to children.
Accordingly, all Committees of experts that monitor the implementation of core international human rights treaties play a role in the protection and promotion of children’s rights and can make relevant recommendations to States Parties. The treaty bodies that have a communications procedure can receive communications from children or adults on their behalf.
The CRC Committee has developed General Comments together with other treaty bodies (‘Joint General Comments’) (See General Comments adopted by the CRC Committee section).
Special procedures mandate holders, and the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) also issue recommendations pertaining to children’s rights.
The CRC Committee urges States Parties to ratify the core international human rights treaties and other relevant international instruments (CRC GC 5, para. 17).
In addition to the CRC and its Optional Protocols, there are a number of UN resolutions and additional guidelines (i.e. soft law instruments) that give content to the provisions of the CRC.
All relevant international instruments will thus need to be considered in children’s rights legislative reform
